Denmark is taking the helm at a difficult time for the EU. Along with other member countries and the EU institutions, it is looking to guide the bloc out of the economic crisis and put it back on the path to growth.

The Danish government's 4 big priorities are the economy, growth, the environment and security.

In the everyday life of a small community like Sângeorgiu de Pădure, which is the host of Europe Direct Tarnave Information Centre, both active and retired teachers must have a well-defined role in society.
That is exactly why I was so delighted when I was reading the suggestion of the European Economic and Social Committee according to which Active Aging should be one of the priorities of Europe 2020. When we developed our activity program for 2011 we did not know yet that 2012 would be the European Year of active aging and intergenerational solidarity, but still we included some events among out activities that could tune us towards this priority.

As a first step we “drew up an inventory” of pensioner teachers, at the same time sending them Easter Greeting Cards via volunteers (identical action is scheduled for Christmas).

In order to discuss the aspects of active aging and solidarity between generations in our community we considered the “Teacher’s Day” as the most adequate, this way we could invite both functional and retired teachers.

The Committee of the Regions, AGE Platform Europe and the European Commission have issued a brochure presenting EU funding possibilities for regional and local initiatives to promote active ageing and solidarity between generations.

The brochure aims to make a particular contribution to the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012.

The majority of initiatives to promote active ageing – throughout 2012 and onwards – will be taken without financial support from the EU, but in some cases EU funding will play a role. The brochure shows what resources are available and invites regional and local stakeholders to make the best possible use of them, preferably working in partnerships involving several countries.

The brochure presents numerous examples of projects which have received EU funding. It also includes short presentations of the most relevant EU funding programmes to support new active ageing projects.
